Personal
accident - what your travel insurance policy does not cover
Personal accident cover pays out a lump sum which is supposed
to compensate you (or your heirs) if you are disabled (or
die) as a result of an accident. If you already have life
insurance which pays out on your death and/or permanent
health insurance which pays out if you are injured, personal
accident cover is of limited value.
What is not covered
The lump sum will not be paid out if the accident was caused
by you or if you died or were injured as a result of:
• Piloting a plane
• Suicide or deliberate self-injury – including
drug, alcohol or solvent abuse
• Putting yourself at unnecessary risk – unless
you were attempting to save someone’s life
• Taking part in a hazardous activity.
Policies may also reduce the amount of the lump sum paid
for children under 16 or older people over a certain age
– 76, for example.
